Caldwell 40 Fixed Telescopic Forklift Boom 4000Lb

Caldwell FB-40 Fixed Telescopic Fork Lift Boom 4,000 lb Capacity with 12-Foot Maximum Reach

The Caldwell Model FB-40 is a fixed telescopic fork lift boom engineered for contractors and trades professionals who need reliable, extended horizontal reach from a standard fork truck. With a rated capacity of 4,000 lbs and a telescoping boom that extends to a maximum horizontal reach of 12 feet in 1-foot increments, this attachment transforms a standard lift truck into a versatile material placement tool. It is designed for heavy-duty jobsite use where precise load positioning at extended distances is critical. The FB-40 slides directly onto fork truck tines, making it a practical add-on for operations that already own lift equipment.

Unlike fixed-length boom attachments, the FB-40's telescoping design allows operators to adjust reach on the fly without swapping equipment, reducing downtime and improving site efficiency. The unit ships with a swivel hook installed and is also available with a fixed hook, giving contractors flexibility in how they rig loads. The combination of alternate hook positions, a restraining chain, and a boom locking t-pin sets the FB-40 apart from simpler, less configurable boom designs.

Key Features & Benefits

Telescoping Boom with 12-Foot Maximum Reach

The boom extends from a compact starting position to a full 12 feet of horizontal reach, adjustable in 1-foot increments. This range of adjustment allows contractors to place loads at precise distances without repositioning the lift truck, improving workflow on congested jobsites. A handle at the end of the boom makes manual extension straightforward, even when the operator is working alone.

Boom Locking T-Pin

The locking t-pin secures the telescoping section at the desired extension length, preventing unintended retraction under load. This mechanical locking feature is a critical safety element that keeps the boom positively fixed during lifts. Contractors can trust that the selected reach position will not shift during pick-and-place operations.

Restraining Chain with Grab Hook

A factory-installed restraining chain and grab hook provide a secondary retention point for loads, adding an important layer of security during lifts and transport. This feature helps prevent load shift or accidental disengagement in dynamic jobsite conditions. It is particularly valuable when working at extended boom lengths where load moment is at its highest.

Alternate Hook Positions

Multiple hook mounting positions allow operators to adjust the load attachment point along the boom, optimizing the weight distribution and effective capacity for specific lifts. This configurability means the same boom can handle a broader range of load types and rigging configurations. Contractors can fine-tune the setup to match the job rather than working around a fixed hook location.

Swivel or Fixed Hook Options

The FB-40 is available with either a swivel or fixed hook to match different rigging requirements. Units with swivel hooks are in stock and ready to ship, making them the go-to choice for most contractors. Swivel hooks reduce load rotation and make it easier to align suspended loads with target placement areas.

Broad Capacity Range Across Model Line

The Model FB series is available in 3,000, 4,000, 5,000, and 8,000 lb capacities, allowing contractors to select the right tool for their specific lift truck and load requirements. All four sizes are in stock, minimizing lead time for project procurement. This consistency across the product line simplifies fleet management for contractors running multiple lift trucks.

Common Applications

Steel and Structural Member Placement

The FB-40 is well-suited for positioning steel beams, columns, and structural members at extended horizontal distances from the fork truck's base position. This is especially useful in steel erection work where the lift truck cannot be positioned directly beneath the target location.

Precast Concrete Component Placement

Contractors use telescopic fork lift booms to set precast wall panels, lintels, and slabs in locations that a standard fork carriage cannot directly access. The 12-foot reach allows for precise placement even when building footprint or site congestion limits truck maneuverability.

Rooftop and Elevated Material Delivery

The extended reach of the FB-40 makes it effective for delivering materials to elevated work areas or over parapet walls where a straight lift is not possible. HVAC units, lumber bundles, and roofing materials are common candidates for this type of lift.

Mechanical and HVAC Equipment Rigging

Mechanical contractors use fork lift booms to rig and position large HVAC units, generators, and mechanical equipment into tight equipment rooms or rooftop curbs. The swivel hook option simplifies load alignment during final placement.

Loading and Unloading at Dock Areas

When loading or unloading flatbed trucks or containers, the telescoping boom extends horizontal reach beyond the standard fork envelope, allowing single-operator retrieval of suspended loads without a second spotter in many situations.

General Construction Material Handling

From pipe bundles and rebar cages to lumber packages and heavy equipment components, the FB-40 serves as a versatile rigging attachment for a wide range of general construction lifting tasks. Its compatibility with standard lift trucks already on site keeps additional equipment costs low.

Safety Data Summary

Hazard Information

• Capacity of the lift truck and attachment combination may be less than the capacity shown on the attachment always consult your lift truck manufacturer for the combined rated capacity before use.
• Exceeding rated capacity at any given hook position can result in equipment failure, dropped loads, and serious injury or death.
• Improper rigging of suspended loads can cause load shift, swing, or drop during lifting operations.
• Extended boom lengths significantly reduce the effective lifting capacity operators must reference the capacity-by-hook-position chart before each lift.

Personal Protective Equipment

• Hard hat required in all areas where overhead lifts are performed
• Steel-toed footwear required for all personnel in the lift zone
• High-visibility vest recommended when working near operating lift trucks
• Gloves recommended when handling rigging hardware and the restraining chain

Safe Handling

• Verify the combined capacity of the lift truck and FB-40 attachment before initiating any lift consult lift truck manufacturer documentation.
• Confirm the boom locking t-pin is fully engaged at the desired extension position before lifting any load.
• Attach the restraining chain and grab hook to the load or rigging before lifting.
• Keep all personnel clear of the load path and swing radius during lift operations.
• Do not exceed the rated capacity for the selected hook position as shown in the capacity-by-reach table.
• Inspect the attachment, locking t-pin, restraining chain, and hook for damage or wear before each use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the maximum capacity of the FB-40 at full 12-foot extension?
A: At the full 12-foot hook position, the FB-40 is rated for 1,500 lbs. The full 4,000 lb capacity is only available at hook positions from 3 to 6 feet. Always consult the capacity-by-hook-position chart before making any lift.

Q: Does the FB-40 come with a swivel hook or a fixed hook?
A: Units currently in stock are equipped with swivel hooks. The FB-40 is also available with a fixed hook, but stock availability on fixed-hook units may vary contact Diamond Tool Store at 800-628-4263 to confirm current availability.

Q: How does the telescoping boom lock in place during a lift?
A: The boom extension is secured by a locking t-pin mechanism. Operators set the desired extension length and engage the t-pin before lifting. The pin must be fully seated before any load is applied to the hook.

Q: Is my lift truck's rated capacity the same as the FB-40's rated capacity?
A: Not necessarily. The combined capacity of the lift truck and attachment may be less than the capacity shown on the FB-40. Caldwell and Diamond Tool Store strongly recommend consulting your lift truck manufacturer to determine the actual combined capacity rating before use.

Q: What other capacities are available in the Model FB series?
A: The Caldwell Model FB series is available in four capacities: 3,000 lb (FB-30), 4,000 lb (FB-40), 6,000 lb (FB-60), and 8,000 lb (FB-80). All four sizes are in stock.

Q: Can the FB-40 be used with wire rope slings, chain slings, or synthetic slings?
A: Yes. The hook is compatible with standard rigging hardware including wire rope slings, chain slings, and synthetic web slings. Ensure all rigging components are rated for the intended load and that the restraining chain is properly engaged before lifting.
