Caldwell Model 17 Adjustable Lifting Beam 125Tons

The Caldwell Model 17 Adjustable Lifting Beam is a versatile below-the-hook lifting device designed to handle both balanced and unbalanced loads.

Featuring an adjustable bail and movable lifting points, the Model 17 allows operators to quickly adapt to changing load configurations while maintaining low headroom requirements. The beam is ideal for manufacturing, fabrication, construction, maintenance, and material handling applications. Designed and manufactured in accordance with ASME B30.20 standards, the Model 17 provides a safe and economical lifting solution for a wide range of industrial environments.

Benefits of the Adjustable Bail

The adjustable bail is one of the primary advantages of the Model 17. By shifting the bail horizontally, operators can compensate for uneven load distribution and position the lifting point closer to the load's center of gravity.

Benefits include:

• Improved load stability
• Safer lifting of off-center loads
• Reduced rigging adjustments
• Faster setup times
• Better load control
• Improved crane hook alignment
• Enhanced versatility for varying load configurations

The lifting beam should always be level during lifting operations and the load center of gravity should align with the crane hook whenever possible.

Standard Equipment

Operating Instructions

Before Lifting

1. Verify the beam capacity exceeds the load weight.
2. Inspect the beam for damage, wear, cracks, or deformation.
3. Position the adjustable bail and hook lugs before lifting.
4. Ensure all adjustment pins pass completely through both channels.
5. Verify shackles and rigging components are properly secured.

During Lifting

1. Align the crane hook with the load center of gravity.
2. Perform a test lift several inches above the ground.
3. Confirm the beam remains level.
4. Verify the load is balanced.
5. Lift only as high as necessary.

After Use

1. Inspect for damage or excessive wear.
2. Store in a clean, dry location.
3. Remove damaged equipment from service immediately.

Safety Guidelines

• Never exceed rated capacity.
• Never lift personnel.
• Never lift loads over personnel.
• Never leave a suspended load unattended.
• Inspect before every use.
• Verify pins are fully engaged before lifting.
• Maintain beam level during lifting operations.
• Remove damaged equipment from service immediately.
• Follow OSHA, ANSI, ASME, state, and local regulations.
• Do not modify the beam without written approval from Caldwell.

Unauthorized modifications void the manufacturer's warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Model 17 different from a standard lifting beam?

The adjustable bail allows the lifting point to be repositioned horizontally, making it easier to safely handle unbalanced loads.

How are lifting points adjusted?

Hook lugs move along the beam in 6-inch increments and are secured using adjustment pins.

Are shackles included?

Yes. Shackles are supplied as standard equipment.

Are swivel hooks available?

Yes. Option S includes a pair of swivel hooks.

Is the beam suitable for low-headroom applications?

Yes. The design specifically provides clearance where vertical lifting space is limited.

Can the beam handle unbalanced loads?

Yes. The adjustable bail was specifically designed to compensate for off-center load conditions.

What standards does it comply with?

The Model 17 is designed and manufactured to comply with ASME B30.20 and BTH-1 Design Category B, Service Class 2 requirements.

What information is included in the downloadable manual?

The manual contains operating procedures, inspection requirements, maintenance recommendations, adjustment instructions, load balancing guidance, safety warnings, capacity information, and lifting diagrams.
